RIP Pete Seeger - an uncompromising master of the banjo and noble causes -
RIP Pete Seeger! A true original, uncompromising, trailblazer, advancing the folk revival(s), social justice, and environmental stewardship.
I saw him live a few times, most memorably at the Great Hudson River Revival - his folk festival benefiting the environmental organization he founded, Clearwater. (I think that was the first time I saw the great Emmylou Harris as well.)
It’s worth seeing the documentary on his life “The Power of Song” from 2007. I was lucky enough to catch the DC premier at AFI Silver, w/ director & some family (no Pete, but a concert afterwards featuring members of the Seeger and Guthrie clans in the Discovery courtyard:-) Hopefully PBS will air it again soon!

Yale censored a student’s course selection website. So I made an unblockable replacement -
Totally awesome! This Yale student takes the university to task for its heavy-handed takedown of innovative web site that made it easier for students to shop for courses. Sean Haufler created a Chrome extension that replicates the functionality of the banned web site in the browser - mitigating Yale’s intellectual property objections.
Read Sean’s excellent take on Yale’s unfair treatment of the popular and innovative YBB+ web site, created by fellow Yalies (and brothers) Peter Xu and Harry Yu, as well as his further refinement of the concept. This is an excellent example of open data hacking (the good kind), as well as the hidebound behavior of my alma mater that flies in the face of academic freedom and innovation - showing higher education clinging to tradition as the world rushes past.
Elite institutions such as Yale - which certainly continues to provide an excellent education - will doubtless survive the upheaval facing higher education today. But many mediocre or less well-established institutions face a very uncertain future.

Sounds amazing, gotta check out this music. You should too!
